What is CSA?

CSA is an acronym for community supported agriculture. The basic premise is that the "community", often called members, subscribers or perhaps shareholders invest in a farms operation before the season begins. If all goes well, the community is repaid during harvest time with a box of fresh local produce each week.

The CSA movement is a relatively recent phenomenon with roots in Europe and in Japan where it's called "taikai" or "food with the farmers face on it." It is of course, much more than a box of food. It's about knowing exactly where your food comes from, who grew it and how. This relationship ties closely to our thoughts on organic certification.

CSA is currently experiencing huge growth in the United States as more and more people are demanding fresh, quality, locally grown food for themselves and their families. Some recent polls are actually placing "locally grown" above organic, but only when the consumer knows the grower.

It has only been a generation or two ago that agriculture was an integral part of life. We were once on a first name basis with those that grew or produced nearly everything on our tables if in fact we didn't do it ourselves. CSA is just one step in reviving that relationship.

We urge you to explore our local agricultural scene here in the Puget Sound. Check out localharvest.org or pugetsondfresh.com & contact a farmer near you. Talk to them about what and how they grow. Make a visit to the farm if you can. Careful though, once you've taken the step it's hard to go back!

Here is a rough guide to what we are planting this year. This list does not include the individual varieties of each plant. We are doing some pretty extensive trials this year. For instance, we have 11 varieties of onions, about 20 lettuce varieties and at least 12 tomato varieties. Our aim is to provide enough locally grown seasonal produce for 2 vegetarians or a family of 4 non-vegetarians.
